How to Get Your OpenAI API Key: A Step-by-Step Guide
Integrating OpenAI into your app starts with obtaining your own API key from OpenAI’s platform. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of acquiring your OpenAI API key and explain how to use it to unlock the full potential of AI in your application.

What is an OpenAI API Key?
An OpenAI API key is used to access OpenAI’s AI models, such as GPT-4, DALL·E, and Codex. This unique key allows your app to communicate directly with these AI services, giving you more flexibility and control over how you use the AI and manage costs.
Step 1: Visit OpenAI’s API Key Page
To get started, go to https://platform.openai.com/api-keys.
If you already have an OpenAI account, you’ll be prompted to log in. If you don’t have an account, you will first be asked to create one.

Step 2: Access the API Keys Section
Once logged in, you will be directed to the API Keys page, where you can view and manage your keys. You’ll also find an option to Create new secret key at the top right.

Step 3: Generate a New API Key
Click the “Create new secret key” button to generate a new API key.
You will be prompted to give your new API key a nickname. This helps identify it for future reference. After naming it, click “Create new secret key”.

Step 4: Secure Your API Key
Your newly created API key will be displayed as a long string of characters. Be sure to copy and store this key securely, as it will not be shown again. If you lose it, you’ll need to generate a new key.

Step 5: Add Your OpenAI API Key to Your Superinterface Workspace
Once you have your OpenAI API key, you can integrate it into your Superinterface workspace or other platforms that require an API key.
To add it to Superinterface, go to your dashboard, navigate to the AI Providers section, and select OpenAI. Paste your API key into the designated field and save your changes.

Managing OpenAI's Billing and Usage
OpenAI charges based on your usage, so it’s important to keep track of your consumption.
To stay on top of your spending, visit the Usage section of your OpenAI account, where you can monitor your usage, set limits, and request more if necessary.
Deleting your OpenAI API Key
If you need to disable your OpenAI's API key, head to the API Keys section. You’ll find a list of your keys, with options to the right for managing them. Simply click the trash can icon next to the key you want to remove. Once a key is revoked, it’s immediately disabled, and any API requests using that key will be rejected, which could potentially disrupt systems still relying on it. After revocation, the key will no longer be accessible or modifiable, ensuring it can't be used again.
